Tim Smit was born in Holland. He read Archaeology and Anthropology at Durham University and worked for ten years in the music industry before moving to Cornwall, where he and John Nelson together ‘discovered’ and then restored the Lost Gardens of Heligan.
Eden began as a dream in 1995 and opened its doors to the public in 2000, since when more than 6 million people have come to see what was once a sterile pit turned into a cradle of life, containing world-class horticulture and startling architecture symbolic of human endeavour. Eden has had a pivotal role in regional tourism development and economic regeneration. It demonstrates once and for all that sustainability is about good business practice and the citizenship values of the future.
Tim is a Trustee, Patron and Board Member of a number of statutory and voluntary bodies both locally and nationally. He has received a variety of national awards including The Royal Society of Arts Albert Medal. In 2002 he was awarded an Honorary CBE in the New Years Honours List and he has received Honorary Doctorates and Fellowships from a number of Universities.

Geoff leads DF Concerts, which was founded in Dundee in the early 1980s. It is one of Europe’s leading concert promotion companies, bringing the best live music and events to audiences in Scotland, including the iconic King Tut’s in Glasgow. The company is also the promoter behind Scotland’s most successful music festival, T in the Park.
In the early 1990’s, DF Concerts spotted a large gap in the country’s live music scene - a major multi-stage festival for Scottish music fans. DF Concerts found a willing partner in Tennent’s Lager and created the live weekend music phenomenon, T in the Park. It has developed in size and stature since it was first staged in 1994 and has become one of the biggest and best festivals in Europe, attracting hundreds of the music industry’s top acts and a crowd that now exceeds 60,000 each day to its current site at Balado near Kinross.
While DF Concerts has grown to become a major player in the UK music industry, the scope of their activity has spread further afield into Europe, with concerts in Prague, Berlin, Valencia and Paris. DF Concerts also worked on Moscow’s biggest ever concert, headlined by Prodigy in Red Square.
The company continues to roll out new products – it is a partner in the hugely successful Virgin sponsored V festivals which have been voted as amongst Europe’s best music events, and in 2000 they teamed up with long-term partners Tennent’s Lager to launch an annual contemporary music event at the Edinburgh Festival, T on the Fringe.
DF Concerts have been jointly awarded the title of SECC Concert Promoter of the Year Award 2004, the first time a Scottish promoter has staked a claim to the title.
Geoff was awarded the Lloyd’s TSB / Sunday Mail Great Scot 2002 Business Award.

Pitlochry Festival Theatre’s award-winning business idea makes the most of its own artistic strengths and the wider attractions available in Highland Perthshire. It aims to generate valuable business during quieter months. The theatre used a TIDA win to develop a range of themed breaks around activities such as visual arts, creative writing, crafts, traditional music, performance, production and theatre skills and were successfully launched in 2005.
ScotlandWhisky “See the Country, Taste the Spirit” aims to build on the opportunities presented by Scotland’s best known export as a reason to visit Scotland. A range of collaborative initiatives have resulted, including Scotch Whisky Embassies (accommodation providers), the Honorary Stillman and Whisky Loch Lomond.
Rembrandt 400 has been both a cultural and economic success, transforming tourism in Amsterdam in 2006. An additional €100 million is expected to be spent by visitors to the Netherlands. In addition to the exhibitions as part of the core programme, a large number of other activities were also created including Rembrandt walks in Amsterdam and Leiden, the ice sculpture festival in Leiden and Rembrandt the Musical. These extra activities drew an additional 700,000 visitors. The total official programme has therefore attracted 2.7 million visitors to date. Our speaker Dr Baaij was formerly with the Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions, sits on the Rembrandt 400 Foundation and was actively involved in the entire project.
Aviemore & Cairngorm DM is the private sector body charged with presenting a coordinated approach to destination management and marketing for the communities and businesses of the region, and aims to position Aviemore and the Cairngorms as a quality, year-round destination among key target audiences in the leisure, and conference and incentive tourism sectors in particular.

Praise from the 2006 event:
"High calibre individuals who have actually 'been there and done that' in the tourism industry, so felt highly relevant and motivating. Great mix of the visionary stuff with the practical/pragmatic"
